People talk about lying as if it could be defined in simple black and white terms. Over the last twenty years, my colleagues and I have studied lying among adolescents on five continents.In this strategy they specifically move conversations away from touchy areas to distract parents from asking questions they don’t want to answer. Teens often report being very conscious of steering the conversation.Did poorly on a test you know your parent is worried about?Over half of programs (54.8 %) reported no coverage of teen dating violence training, and the majority of graduate students (86.5 %) identified their lack of training as the most common barrier to appropriately dealing with teen dating violence in school settings.
Logistic regression results indicated that graduate students with higher rates of self-efficacy and stronger beliefs about the importance of the role of the school psychologist in dealing with teen dating violence were more likely to respond to teen dating violence in their internship setting.It is making statements that are factually untrue and presenting them as true: “I finished my (untouched) homework.” This type of lying is least frequent, but has the most devastating effects on relationships, undermining trust and leading to negative cycles of parent-adolescent interactions.
